Common questions about MIAMs & mediation
A Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting (MIAM) is a short, private meeting with a registered mediator. In England and Wales, anyone applying to court for most family orders must first show they have attended, or been exempted from, a MIAM.
A MIAM is £125 per person, with joint sessions from £180 per person and a £50 court certificate if needed. Many families are also eligible for the Ministry of Justice's Family Mediation Voucher Scheme, worth up to £500 towards the cost of mediation on child arrangements.
We can invite them to take part and explain the process independently. If they decline or don't respond, we can issue the MIAM certificate needed to apply to court, confirming mediation was attempted.
Yes, exemptions include evidenced domestic abuse, child protection concerns, urgency, or situations where one party cannot be located. We'll talk this through sensitively and confidentially with you first.
Not automatically. We prepare a summary of proposals which your solicitors can convert into a consent order, making it legally binding and enforceable through the court.
Your safety comes first. Mediation isn't appropriate in many abuse cases, and we screen for this carefully and privately at your MIAM before deciding whether to proceed.
